Portfolio Project 4 Dartboard

Portfolio Project Questions:

1. What are the official dimensions of a dartboard?

Dimensions: A standard dartboard is 17.75 inches in diameter. The circle on the dartboard is equally divided into 20 pie-shaped segments. It contains an inner ring, or bull’s-eye, that is a half-inch in diameter, and an outer ring surrounding the bull’s-eye with a 1.25-inch diameter. Narrow triple ring and double ring bands vary in width from about .32 to .38 inches, depending on the material they are made from. The outside edge of the triple ring is 4.2 inches from the center of the bull’s-eye and the outside edge of the double ring is 6.7 inches away.

Details: Segments on the dartboard are alternately dark and light colored, and each segment possesses a different value, indicating the points earned for a dart that lands on it. Segment value numbers are imprinted on the dartboard in the no-score area. They are always ordered as follows, starting at the 12 o’clock position: 20, 1, 18, 4, 13, 6, 10, 15, 2, 17, 3, 19, 7, 16, 8, 11, 14, 9, 12, 5. The segment valued at 20 is a dark color.

Placement: Hang the dartboard so that the 20 is at the top center of the board and the center of the bull’s-eye is 5 feet 8 inches from the floor. Measure 7 feet 9.25 inches out from the wall where the dartboard is hanging and mark a line on the floor behind which players may throw the darts.

2. Is there an official design?

A regulation dartboard is divided into 20 numbered segments and a bullseye. Each of the segments and the bullseye are divided into different regions. These regions are called the beds of a dartboard.

Each segment is divided into inner (skinny) and outer (fat) singles segments.
The inner ring dividing the inner and outer singles segments is the triples area.
The outer ring dividing the outer singles segment from the board is doubles.
The bullseye is divided into an outer bull and an center inner bull. Different games treat the two bullseye regions differently:
Bullseye 50 points. Outer bull single 25 points, Inner Bull double 50 points.

Looking at the dartboard in quadrants, the 4 quadrants contain the following segments (including the overlapped segments and the top/bottom/left/right):

    Upper Right: 20, 1, 18, 4, 13, 6
    Upper Left: 20, 5, 12, 9, 14, 11
    Lower Right: 6, 10, 15, 2, 17, 3
    Lower Left: 11, 8, 16, 7, 19, 3
    Left: 20, 5, 12, 9, 14, 11, 8, 16, 7, 19, 3
    Right: 20, 1, 18, 4, 13, 6, 10, 15, 2, 17, 3

3. Are there official colors?

You might not know that there are two separate darts organizations, the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) and the BDO (British Darts Organization). The best and most well-known dart players play in the PDC, but the organizations are separate so this is worthy of note.

PDC (DRA) rule referring to dartboard colouring:
5.13.09 The dartboard shall be fixed such that the 20 segment is coloured black and is at the top of the dartboard.

BDO rule:
4.2 The dartboard shall be fixed such that the '20' segment is the darker of the two segment colours and is at the top centre of the dartboard.

So as you can see, the PDC states the 20 segment should be black, but doesn’t state explicitly that the other segment on the board must be white.
The BDO rules only say the 20 should be the darker segment, so they could have a board with dark blue and light blue segments for example.
